Centre can help those who are supporting people battling against eating disorders
A CENTRE that has been helping people with eating disorders for more than ten years has started offering support to those who care for the people that use its service.
Steps – Specialist Eating Disorder Service – has been helping people with issues with food such as bulimia, anorexia from its base in the grounds of Southmead Hospital since 1999.
But now it has started offering its support to the carers and relatives and friends of the people referred to the NHS service.
In what is believed to be the only service of its kind, those who support someone with an eating disorder can attend the group sessions to share their experiences with others who understand what they are going through while also receiving advice and education about the issues linked to eating disorders.
Prior to the group being set up, carers, relatives, friends or partners would only have access to such support alongside the person with an eating disorder or on a one-to-one basis.
Day therapy co-ordinator at Steps, Adam Deuchars, said: "It seems to be two-fold really. First of all there is the educational element, passing on advice and making suggestions but there is also the sense of carers meeting other carers in a similar situation and giving support.
"Often in this service or other services the carer is in the room alongside the person with an eating disorder and they might be trying to be strong and supportive for the individual they are looking after, while at the same time there is a huge emotional burden on them. This gives their own space to think and talk about what they are going through.
"Generally we won't meet with carers on an individual basis.
"But caring can be very tiring and emotionally exhausting.
"We are trying to think more holistically about a more rounded review of care and support for everybody involved not just the individual sufferer."
Steps offers people with eating disorders a range of different therapies and inpatient and outpatient services to help them to deal with their issues around food.
The Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership-run service is made up of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians to support people in dealing with their food issues in the way that seems most appropriate for the individual. People are referred to Steps by their GPs. There are six inpatient beds for people who need more intensive support with their eating disorder.
Practical support is also given to people who need help preparing and cooking meals. Mr Deuchars said there has been a steady increase in the number of people being referred to Steps in the last couple of years.
"There has been a real increase in demand for the service and we have had more people turning up who are more poorly and physically compromised by their eating disorder.
"We don't have a particular means of trying to understand that but know that it is the case for other services across the South West and the rest of the country. That could be because more people are aware of the service we offer and that is helpful because it means more people access help more quickly."
He said that as there was no "quick fix" for eating disorders people could be using the service for months or years before they are discharged.
"The carers sessions set up by Bobby Orchard, our specialist occupational therapist are a nice addition to the service," he said. "Having something ongoing has proved invaluable and as far as we are aware it is unique."
The sessions for carers are being held every two months. To book a place or find out more, contact Steps on 0117 323 6113.
Patchway primary pupils inspired by thought provoking workshop
Murder, magic and madness – the murky themes of Macbeth were explored by children from two Patchway primary schools at a creative learning workshop.
Year 6 pupils from Coniston Primary School and Callicroft Primary School were invited to the Merlin Housing Society-sponsored workshop last week. The youngsters took part in games and exercises designed to explore some of the play's issues in a fun and engaging way.
One pupil said, "It was wicked! The masks helped us imagine the characters, the games were great fun and the witches' scenes were really exciting – Shakespeare isn't boring!"
Head Teacher at Coniston Primary School, Nigel Isaac said, "During the session, the pupils asked important questions about themselves, their motivations, ambitions and their role within their community.
"They then took this back to the classroom to see where these issues fit into their wider citizenship and social studies. I believe the things they've learnt will have a significant impact on the pupils going forward."
Merlin's Community Investment Officer, Louisa Massey said "Patchway is one of our key neighbourhoods. A lot of our residents live in the Coniston area, so we're delighted when we can help fund worthwhile, educational and fun projects like these to enhance our community."
The workshop was developed and delivered by a company called Contender Charlie, which uses the power of storytelling and mythology to enhance and inspire the creative learning of young people as well as their teachers.

How's Business looks to be the real deal
HOW'S Business is a pretty smart mare and will surely have too many guns for her rivals in the European Breeders' Fund/Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Mares' Novices' Chase at Plumpton.
The eight-year-old has returned from a lengthy absence seemingly better than ever, recording wins at Wincanton and Ffos Las on her last two outings. She has now visited the winner's enclosure on seven occasions in total and she really ought to add to that tally in what is only an ordinary heat.
Linda Jewell's She's Humble must have every chance of adding to her tally at the track in the Crystal Services Handicap Chase.
The 10-year-old is a three-time course winner and has also been placed on a further seven occasions, although in fairness, she has run almost exclusively here for the last couple of years.
She was a good winner on her latest visit to Sussex and, with Richard Johnson maintaining the ride, the mare looks bound to be involved.
Illustrious Forest has made giant strides since being stepped up in distance and can complete a course and distance hat-trick at Wolverhampton.
The four-year-old has failed to make much impression in six starts on the grass, but there were definite signs of promise on his all-weather debut at this track back in October, when he finished fifth over nine furlongs.
Tackling this mile-and-a-half distance on his next start, John Mackie's chestnut won with his head in his chest by eight lengths, prompting the handicapper to raise his mark by a stone.
While that hefty hike would have stopped lesser horses in their tracks, Illustrious Forest showed he remains very much on the upgrade by following up a little over a month later.
He is 6lb higher this time, but the booking of crack apprentice Jack Duern negates that rise and the pair should prove a formidable partnership in the Bet At Blue Square On Your Mobile Handicap.

Fault with boiler work resulted in woman's death
A GAS fitter from Radstock has told a court he felt "awful" that his work installing a boiler led to the death of a millionaire's daughter from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Andrew Hartley, 36, said he could not explain why he had not fitted the boiler properly.
Hartley is on trial at Bristol Crown Court accused of manslaughter by gross negligence after Zoe Anderson, 24, the daughter of Future Publishing magazine tycoon Chris Anderson, died when overcome by gas fumes.
Miss Anderson was found dead by her boyfriend in the shower room at her father's home in Lansdown, Bath, nearly two weeks after the boiler had been installed in December 2010.
The prosecution claims Hartley, who was paid more than £2,000, did a "rushed" and "botch" job, failing to secure the flue pipe correctly, if at all.
They allege that instead of the boiler fumes going down the flue pipe to the outside, they were being blown into Mr Anderson's garage.
It was first thought that Miss Anderson, a neuroscience graduate, had slipped and banged her head in the en-suite shower room, but later it was found she had collapsed from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Hartley, of Bath New Road, Radstock, denies a charge of manslaughter by gross negligence.
He told jurors that he admitted a charge of contravening gas safety regulations, which reflected his failure to secure the flue pipe with screws.
However, he denied he was grossly negligent during the installation on December 16.
Michael Fitton QC, defending, asked the defendant if he could explain why he had not carried out that piece of work.
Hartley said he could not.
"How did you feel about that?" Mr Fitton asked.
Hartley replied: "Awful."
Hartley said when he left the house the boiler was working and had been fully tested, and had he seen anything wrong he would not have left the property without fixing it.

Half-time: Rotherham Utd 0, Bristol Rovers 0
Chris Zebroski, Matthew Lund and Joe Anyinsah all had decent opportunities to break the deadlock but couldn't hit the target at a blustery Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.
Zebroski's opening arrived in the 20th minute when he beat Rotherham's offside trap and defender Johnny Mullins, but then shot into the side netting.
Three minutes later, Mustapha Carayol got to the byeline and cut the ball back across face of goal – where Matthew Lund somehow failed to find the net from a yard out, the ball rolling wide of the post.
And just before the half-hour mark, Cian Bolger's ball over the top sent Zebroski away down the right. His cross reached Anyinsah eight yards out, but the forward totally miscued his attempt on goal.
Rotherham looked out of sorts in the opening period – so much so that there were ironic cheers from home fans when they won their first corner of the game in the 29th minute.
Scott Griffiths fired high and wide of the target for the Millers on the half-hour and Lewis Grabban saw a shot deflected over the bar in the final action of the half, but opportunities for the home side were limited.
Rotherham United: Warrington, Bradley, Naylor, Mullins, Griffiths, Grabban, Harrison, Taylor, Wood, Revell, Harrad. Subs: Tonge, Warne, Pringle, Cadogan, Raynes.
Bristol Rovers: Bevan, Woodards, Bolger, Parkes, Paterson, Zebroski, Lund, Gill, Dorman, Carayol, Anyinsah. Subs: Smith, Stanley, Harrold, L Brown, Richards.

The Oscars promises to be the most social ever [preview]
The Super Bowl social TV numbers were off the charts, then the Grammys ? by one measure ? unseated the big game as the most social event in TV history. And with the Academy Awards this weekend, media and social TV companies are gearing up for another huge event. We?ve gathered (and we?re still adding to) the most comprehensive social media preview for Sunday?s show:
- The Oscars is bringing back the Backstage Pass, a second-screen experience on Oscar.com and free apps for the iPad and iPhone. It will have even more goodies: 20 cameras between the red carpet and the show itself, and plenty of social stuff. This year, you can watch along with the show in two modes: ?direct? allows you to pick any camera vantage points inside the theater during the show and zoom in to whatever action you want to see. And ?watch? mode lets you enjoy a hosted second-screen experience on the red carpet and backstage. A ticker will tell you what?s happening on various camera positions.
- What?s Trending?s Shira Lazar will be back hosting the second-screen event, this time with Sherri Shepherd, Cameron Mathison and Jake Whetter ? they?ll be tweeting along, as well. During the red carpet event, you can tweet a question directly to the hosts using the hashtag #RedCarpetQA. Or you can point out your favorites with #bestdressed. Both in the app and on Oscar.com, you can dial up a ?buzz? section featuring the latest tweets from insiders, ?movie moments? and all tweets hashtagged #Oscars. It also displays trending topics, ranked by tweets per minute (or TPM, as the cool kids say.)
- The Oscars teamed with up Facebook to enable fans to make their predictions before the show, sharing their picks with their friends. As the show airs, the picks will be graded live and compared against their friends. (It?s not TV, but it?s worth mentioning that I?m a big fan of the New York Times? Facebook Oscars Ballot. One of my favorite Facebook integrations for any news site.)
- Oh, and the Academy will be live-tweeting from a few official accounts, as well. Follow @TheAcademy for a behind-the-scenes look, @OscarInterviews with insights from the press room and @OscarGoer that will take you into the theater as if you?re attending the ceremony yourself.
- Overwhelmed yet? We?re just getting warmed up here. For the first time, Twitter has assembled a ?live-tweeting cast? that will keep you entertained as you watch (interesting that Twitter has organized the group, which illustrates its growing role in emphasizing its value as the second screen experience). ?Watch the Oscars unfold on Twitter through the eyes of our live-tweeting cast tuning in along with you and sharing exclusive Oscars commentary you won?t see anywhere else,? Twitter explains. The list of 14 includes Eva Longoria, Randy Jackson and red carpet host Nina Garcia. Twitter has also compiled a list of nominees, presenters and other Hollywood names.
#Oscars are a few days away. Tonight I might tweet winner of best supporting actor. Really, who can stop me?
? Billy Crystal (@BillyCrystal) February 23, 2012
- Not to mention, host Billy Crystal plans to be active on Twitter as well, even during the ceremony itself. You may remember, he announced via Twitter that he was taking over hosting duties a day after Eddy Murphy quit the role. He?s been tweeting away ever since, cracking pre-Oscars jokes.
- ABC?s Good Morning America will hold a Google Hangout during the show with a select few ? producer Gianna Toboni will be representing ? and the show has asked G+ followers why they should be a part of it.
- Yahoo?s second-screen play, IntoNow, says it?s pulling out the stops for Sunday. You?ll be able to rate the fashions on the red carpet with thumbs up/thumbs down, predict the winners, participate in synchronized polls (while seeing where you stand against your friends), see synchronized companion content about the show and participate in discussions with your IntoNow friends.
- GetGlue is asking fans to also check in before the big event for a series of pre-show badges ?See as many nominated films as you can to level-up from Viewer to Critic to Aficionado before the show begins,? GetGlue explains. In all, GetGlue is offering 10 stickers this year, and you?ll also be able to check into GetGlue straight from Oscar.com.
- The second-screen startup ConnecTV ? which just launched with hundreds of partner TV stations ? promises to be ?the best second-screen Oscar experience ever.? ConnecTV says it?s compiled plenty of companion content which ?doesn?t just include fashion?even though we?ve definitely got some fashion tid bits coming your way?it also includes in-depth coverage of all the celebrities and movies.? ConnecTV is available online or as an iPad app.
- As we wrote about yesterday, Los Angeles station KABC has partnered with Trendrr to integrate trending social coverage on-air and online. Lots more details here.
- And what about those commercials? Advertisers are paying $1.7 million a pop despite the fact ratings have been in a long decline. One of the ads planned for Sunday evening will be for Samsung?s upcoming ?smart interaction? TV (above) that responds to voice and motion commands (it was unveiled at CES.) ?The Oscars are totally aligned with what home entertainment consumers are passionate about,? Peggy Ang, vice president of marketing communications, told USA Today. The set will cost $2,000 to $3,500.
Phew! We?re still receiving emails and press releases with more Oscars plans, and we?ll update them here throughout the day. Then make sure you?re following @lostremote on Sunday as we point out some of our favorite social TV moments, and we?ll post a big wrap-up here on LostRemote.com soon after the show.

Oscars: Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams know the score for the telecast -- they wrote it
The two had only one rule when writing the music for the awards show: Try anything. And they did, drawing from Zimmer's evocative film scores and Williams' beat-driven sound art.

Rotherham United v Bristol Rovers - McGhee calls for focus
Mark McGhee says he has to ensure Bristol Rovers aren't distracted by their unusual surroundings when they make their first competitive visit to Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium for tomorrow's clash with Rotherham United.
The Millers are using the athletics stadium – which was built for the World Student games in 1991 – as their home ground while they wait for a new stadium back in Rotherham to be finished.
In some ways, the venue is similar to the Withdean Stadium, which Brighton used before moving into their new ground at the start of this season.
And with McGhee having managed the Seagulls during their spell at the Withdean, he knows how important it is for the players to focus purely on events on the pitch.
"I'll be right at home – especially if it rains!" said McGhee.
"We had some fantastic days at the Withdean – but once you go over that white line, you have to forget about your surroundings. The dressing rooms and the look of the place can undermine your approach to the game and we have to be vary careful with our players that we don't allow any of that to be a distraction – or an excuse for not playing well.
"Once you step over that white line, the pitch is the same."
McGhee watched Rotherham fight out a 0-0 draw at Gillingham on Tuesday night and knows Rovers will be in for a tough test.
"They are very organised and a big, strong aggressive team with pace in wide areas and up front," he said.
McGhee has hinted that he will again make changes to the starting line-up as he continues to look at different members of the squad.
Winger Mustapha Carayol could be in line for a start and leading scorer Matt Harrold should be available after missing last weekend's game with a hamstring problem.
"Matt has trained this week and will come into the equation," said McGhee.
