Help for elderly and vulnerable to live at home

THE city council will increase the amount it spends on adaptations for elderly and vulnerable people who want to live at home longer.

Spending will rise from £2.55 million to £2.64 million in 2012/13, and this goes on installations of facilities including stair lifts and disabled-friendly bathrooms. But at the same time it will cut the amount it spends on repairs and maintenance of those adaptations, assessments for need, training and other support services.

The authority says this will be achieved from savings and providing a more efficient service while not cutting back on standards.

But concerns were raised during consultation on the changes that the service would not be improved. Elderly people said they wanted things kept as they were.

The Liberal Democrat-run cabinet last night approved a plan that will see it and its neighbouring three councils appoint a joint contract to deal with adaptations, at a cost of £922,000 per year over five years, saving the authority around £200,000.

But cabinet member for housing Anthony Negus said this did not mean a reduction in quality.

He said: "We've provided more adaptations to more people for less money and I'm very proud of that."
